PS7 Visual Arts Program

Mission Statement

To build a thriving art program and community in which every student realizes his or her artistic and academic potential in a positive venue of self-confidence, expression, connection, and interdisciplinary learning—all within the framework of a fine arts education.

About PS7 Arts

Started in 2009, the PS7 Art Program has provided both elementary and middle school students and opportunity to learn the principles, techniques, expressions, and history of art. During the 2009-2010 school year, students learned drawing basics, the elements of art, principles of design, color theory, and art history. The concluding event of the year was a successful school-wide art show. This show gave students an opportunity to celebrate their hard work. Middle school students were able to practice leadership skills by helping prepare and run the event. For this academic year of 2010-2011, we will again have a show featuring both individual and group artistic accomplishments. Our school-wide theme this year will be “Travel the World”, as students learn about different perspectives, cultures, and artistic practices from around the world. These lessons meet national and state visual arts standards across all grade levels. Each grade level will also complete a grade-specific group project that connects their learning from their academic standards and arts standards. Although this is only year two of our program, the visual arts program has already proven itself to be beneficial to all students and we hope to keep moving in this positive direction as the program grows.
