At PS7 Elementary:
Art
All students in grades 1 – 5 participate in art once a week. This year we are expanding our program to also include our kindergarten students and each grade level has the goal of producing one public work of art to be displayed in a public area of campus as part of a school-wide beautification effort. We are also hoping to bring the Crocker Art Museum’s “Art Ark” to PS7 for an exciting week of art education.
After-School Program
Students can choose to participate in an after-school program run by PS7 staff focused on providing a structured environment for students to complete homework, receive academic support and enrichment, and recreational opportunities. This program also runs for an extended time during our intersession program.
Study Hall/Homework Help
PS7’s extended school day allows for all students to have the opportunity to have a structured time at the end of the day to complete homework with the support of a teacher.
Mentoring/Study Buddies
Students from different grade levels are able to work with each other to provide support in both academics and social development.
At PS7 Middle:
Art in Literature
Students are able to analyze the stories studied in their English class through art. Students use various mediums to represent characters, settings, tones, and moods of stories presenting a visual interpretation of literature.
Novel Study
Students build a love of reading through being exposed to characters and stories that they can identify with. Both struggling readers and our advanced students can read a novel that is just right for them. Novels range in both reading level and focus and allow students to experience the world through their imagination.
Advanced Math
Our location on a high school campus allows students who are ready to take high school math. This year we have several 8th graders taking high school Geometry in class alongside PS7 alums at Sac High. Students in the 6th and 7th grade are placed in higher level math classes to prepare them for Geometry in the 7th or 8th grade.
Advanced English
To challenge our students and fully prepare them for high school students can choose to complete activities in advanced English if approved by their teacher. These activities include reading novels such as “Night,” “The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas,” and “Dracula” and preparing for the CAHSEE English exam on 9th and 10th grade standards.
Technology
Students hone their typing skills preparing them for the digital world beyond PS7. In addition, students design web pages and create other forms of media when they have mastered the basics.
Tutoring
Sometimes students learn best from their peers. Through tutoring our advanced students pass their skills and knowledge on to ensure that all of PS7’s students achieve and this is a valuable service-learning experience for the tutors showing them the importance of giving back.
